The increased attention to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) recently by the medical community directly links to their harmful and lasting effects. A TBI sufferer can have problems with:
• Balance and motor coordination
• Concentration
• Headaches
• Speech and walking
TBIs can happen in accidents at work because of a sudden jolt or impact to the head. Even if an accident victim does not get knocked unconscious, there can still be a strong chance of a TBI injury. It’s a good idea for work accident victims to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
A Long-Term Effect
What has been suspected for a long time is now officially confirmed. The New York Times recently reported that there is a definite correlation between a TBI and the development of dementia. With data from over 2 million people and a 36 year-long follow-up period, this Danish study is the largest of its kind.
It Just Takes Once
The study also revealed that it could take as little as one mild TBI to raise the chance of a future dementia diagnosis by 17 percent. It also found that persons with multiple TBI’s substantially increased that dementia risk. It’s not hard to conclude that victims of one or more TBIs may become disabled or incapacitated by dementia decades after their original injuries.
