Social Security Disability Income Attorneys Serving Colorado Springs
There are two types of Social Security Disability benefits administered by the federal government through the Social Security Administration (SSA): Social Security Disability Income, also known as SSDI, and Supplemental Security Income, also known as SSI.
How Does SSDI Work?
SSDI is financed primarily through employee and employer taxes and paid into the Social Security fund. Benefits are paid only to those who contribute to the fund and who are found to be disabled. Benefits are paid both to the worker and his or her dependents if the worker is unable to continue with his or her job because of disability, blindness or death. The amount of benefits received depends on the amount of earnings paid into the system by the worker.
If you are awarded SSDI, you also become entitled to Medicare after receiving disability income for two years.
SSDI Vs. SSI
Persons who have not worked long enough to be covered by Social Security Disability may still be eligible to receive benefits through SSI. Unlike SSDI, you must have minimal income and resources in order to become entitled to SSI. You must also show that you are unable to work because of a physical or mental disability. SSI does not award benefits to dependents.
If you are awarded SSI, you also become entitled to Medicaid benefits.
Why Should I Hire An Attorney For My SSDI Or SSI Claim?
