What are common reasons for SSD benefits to be denied?

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2018 | Firm News

Applying for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits can be an intimidating process. The application is long, and there’s a lot you must do to prove you’re eligible.

It can be incredibly discouraging to find they have declined your SSD application. It’s a frustrating process, but you’re not alone in facing denials. In fact, there are several common causes that lead to initial denials for many Colorado applicants:

Other forms of income

If you’re still receiving an income of any kind, it can have a major impact on your SSD application. Any income may cap the amount you receive. Over a certain amount means your application will be denied completely. If you have other income sources that total over $940 a month, you will not be eligible for any SSD benefits.

Inconsistent medical records

Whether it’s skipping treatments or going long periods with no medical history, this can create issues with your application. The Social Security Administration wants to see consistent treatment of all injuries. If you’re missing years of medical history or frequently skip treatments, it can be a major red flag.

Length of disability

Your disability must last longer than a year. If you have been disabled for less time, it’s highly unlikely you will gain any Social Security Disability benefits. The process looks for long-term injuries first. If you have a newer disability, it may make sense to wait before applying if possible.

Handling a denied claim

If the Social Security Administration has denied your claim, you have options. You have 60 days to appeal the decision. If you understand why you were denied, you can examine the factors and reapply. Don’t take an initial rejection as the final ruling. There are options.

If you’re considering an appeal, it’s important to closely follow the process. An attorney with experience in SSD claims may be able to help.
