Teen worker dies 10 days after he was severely injured on the job

A Colorado family is struggling to cope with the tragic death of their 17-year-old son. The teenager died 10 days after he was injured on the job at an industrial company in Columbus. The young man had been connected to a life support system since the night of the workplace accident, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The Columbus Police Department, Fire Department and paramedics responded after a call was received shortly before 10 p.m. on a Monday night. They arrived to find the teen trapped in a laser cutter. Reportedly, he was clearing away pieces of scrap metal from under the machine when it inexplicably activated, and he was crushed from above.

Rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the severely injured teenager. It was reported that emergency workers found no pulse at that time, but they managed to get his pulse going before he was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, he could only hold on for another 10 days. Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators are currently investigating the incident to determine whether this young worker’s death was caused by his employer’s non-compliance with safety regulations.

Although money will not provide relief for the heartache suffered by this Colorado family, the death benefits that may be claimed through the workers’ compensation insurance system may relieve the financial burden placed on them by this tragedy. Along with the medical expenses incurred in the time leading up to their son’s death, there will also be the costs of end-of-life arrangements and lost income. These expenses are typically covered by the benefits paid through the insurance program to covered the dependents of those fatally injured on the job.
