Fall from ladder causes severe workplace injury

On Behalf of | Jun 21, 2016 | Firm News, Workers' Compensation

Workers in almost all industries in Colorado and other states are exposed to fall hazards. Workplace injuries caused by falls constitute a significant percentage of violations for which federal authorities cite companies, and still yet workers are sent to work at heights without fall protection. One such workplace injury is currently under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The incident occurred at a meat processing plant in another state. An OSHA official reported that a worker was going up a ladder to the roof of the building when he fell. He was apparently tasked with cleaning the vents on the roof.

According to an incident report, the 54-year-old worker suffered severe head trauma when he fell from the ladder. OSHA says by providing appropriate fall protection and training in the proper use of protective equipment, falls can be prevented. The investigators will determine whether the required safety precautions were taken to prevent fall injuries. The lives of workers who have suffered severe head trauma may be forever changed.

Colorado workers may pursue financial relief by filing benefits claims with the workers’ compensation insurance program. Along with compensation to cover medical expenses, a percentage of lost wages will also be awarded. If a workplace injury leaves a worker temporary or permanently disabled, additional compensation may be considered. Some workers choose to utilize the services of experienced workers’ compensation attorneys to pursue all the available benefits. Each case is decided on its merits, but permanent disability may lead to lifelong medical coverage.
